FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) for Prospective Midwifery Students
Q: Where is your school located?
A: We are located at 6870 N Federal Hwy, Boca Raton, FL 33487. Our program is offered through the International Institute for Healthcare Professionals (IIHCP).
Q: What makes your program unique?
A: We are proud to be the only midwifery program that offers both a Midwifery Diploma and an Associate Degree upon graduation. Our program is MEAC-accredited, which ensures high standards and eligibility to become a Licensed Midwife (LM) and Certified Professional Midwife (CPM).
Q: When does the next cohort begin?
A: The next cohort is determined by the school and depends on the time of year.
Q: What is the class schedule like?
A: Our program is full-time, with in-person classes typically held on Thursdays and Fridays from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Your exact schedule may vary each semester depending on the specific courses you are enrolled in.
Q: How are clinical placements handled?
A: Students may attend clinicals at a site that is convenient for them. While we assist in coordinating with preceptors in the community, it is ultimately the student’s responsibility to secure and maintain clinical placement. Open communication and consistent availability for on-call schedules are essential for gaining hands-on experience. Clinical hours vary depending on the site and preceptor, and students are expected to be available to meet the required clinical hours each term.
Q: What are the graduation requirements?
A: Students must complete academic coursework and clinical requirements, including attending a minimum of 100 births. This is a standard set by MEAC and is required for graduation. Students have up to one year after coursework completion to finish their clinical numbers.
Q: What is the difference between a Direct-Entry Midwife and a Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM)?
A: Direct-entry midwives (including LMs and CPMs) are trained as midwives without first becoming nurses. They are licensed to practice autonomously in Florida and provide full-scope care for low-risk pregnancies. CNMs are registered nurses who receive additional training in midwifery and typically practice in hospitals under a physician’s supervision.
Q: What credentials will I be eligible for after graduation?
A: Graduates are eligible to apply for Licensure as a Licensed Midwife (LM) in Florida and sit for the NARM exam to earn the Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) credential.
Q: What is the NARM Exam?
A: The North American Registry of Midwives (NARM) exam is a computer-based exam required to earn the CPM credential. This credential is recognized nationally and may be required for practice in some states.
Q: Do I need to complete all prerequisites before applying?
A: You may apply while still completing prerequisites. If accepted, you may receive a conditional acceptance pending completion of all required coursework before enrollment in August.
Q: What are the qualities of a successful midwifery student?
A: Traits that contribute to success include authenticity, grit, composure under stress, kindness, a willingness to learn, and the ability to communicate effectively—especially with preceptors. Being dependable and available for clinical on-call schedules is also key.
Q: Is student housing available?
A: We do not offer on-campus housing. Most students commute or arrange their own accommodations, such as short-term rentals or staying with family.
Q: Can I work while in midwifery school?
A: Midwifery school is rigorous and time-intensive. Some students manage flexible part-time work, but the demands of classes, study time, and clinical on-call responsibilities make working full-time very challenging.
